The Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto (CAUP) invites applications for one research fellowship ("Bolsa de Investigação") to hire a mechanical engineer.

The candidate is expected to be involved in the development of astronomical instrumentation projects for ESO and ESA, including ESO’s ESPRESSO and MOONS spectrographs, PLATO (ESA) mission, as well as future instrumentation for the E-ELT (ESO).

The successful candidate should preferably start on (or before) the 1st of September and she/he is expected to have the following background:

  • Experience in mechanical project and respective 3D modeling software;
  • Capacity to produce mechanical drawings at manufacturing level (ISO standards);
  • Experience in finite element modeling for structural analysis.

The fellowship contract will comply with the 'Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I. P. - 2013' and 'Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação'. According to the rules of the FCT, the monthly allowance will be 980€ (with a Master degree) or 745€ (for candidates with a “licenciatura” only). All values are tax free. Social security will also be included as per regulation. The contract will initially be offered for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension for an extra 12 months upon satisfactory progress and institutional needs.

Selection Criteria
The applicant must have completed a master degree or a pre-bologna degree (“licenciatura”). Only applications from candidates having an adequate background will be considered.

The evaluation of the candidates will be based on the following criteria:
i) curriculum vitae and degrees, including marks and contents of curricular units completed;
ii) Background in the relevant domain (see above);
iii) Motivation to participate in the instrumentation projects on which the institution is involved, and interest in pursuing these activities in the long term.
