Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto
Advanced Post-doctoral jobs - Ciência2007

The Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto (CAUP) opens a call for 4 Advanced Post-doctoral Researchers under a Contrato-Programa with Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). The positions are for 5 years starting before the end of 2007. The net yearly income is above 42 000 euros (before taxes) corresponding to the salary of an Assistant Professor.

CAUP is the largest Astronomy research institute in Portugal, evaluated as "Excellent" by an international panel under the auspices of FCT. The Strategic Development Plan of CAUP is built around: scientific excellence; public outreach; national networking; internationalization; financial stability. The objective of CAUP is to be an institute with internationally recognized front-line research and actively involved with the leading institutes in Europe on the areas identified as the focus of our research activity.

The ongoing research activities at CAUP (involving 22 researchers and 12 PhD students) are organized along broad lines of research, considered to be strategic for the long term development of CAUP. The selection of the candidates will be based on the contribution these can give to consolidate the development of the teams in the following fields of research:

- Origin and Evolution of Stars and Planets
  • Star Formation
  • Planetary Systems
  • Stellar Structure and Evolution

- Galaxies and the Evolution of the Universe
  • Physical Properties of Galaxies
  • Observational Cosmology

The continued development of these fields of research is secured through participation in international groups and projects, namely in those that lead to the use of existing and future facilities of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and of the European Space Agency (ESA). It is considered strategically important for CAUP to be optimally placed to contribute to large projects within ESA (preparation and exploitation of existing and future space missions) and ESO (use of existing and forthcoming facilities and the scientific driving of the development of the next generation of instrumentation) and also to other international initiatives.

In order to consolidate the participation in major developments in instrumentation across the fields of research at CAUP, astronomers may also be hired with specific expertise in connection with Astronomical Instrumentation and Data Analysis. They should be able to provide the basis for more ambitious links to instrument development in partnerships with more technologically oriented units in Portugal and Europe.

The contracts are aimed at researchers with a PhD and having a relevant scientific curriculum and publication record, with significant experience in their field of research. They will be expected to supervise research students and to propose and conduct new research projects and funding applications (national and international), as well as lead the participation of CAUP in relevant international initiatives in their field of research. A minimum of three years experience as a postdoc is preferred.

The application, to be submitted by email, should include the following:
  • Curriculum Vitae (up to 4 pages – with the indication of the average number of citations per paper and the h-index as provided by ADS) and complete list of publications;
  • Self-evaluation (up to 2 pages) covering the experience in supervision of research students, coordination of research teams and funding applications, participation in international programmes, initiatives and working groups;
  • Description of the research experience and plans (up to 3 pages) including summary of past expertise, present state of the art and proposed work plan (with possible connections to ESO, ESA and to other international programmes and initiatives) for the next 5 years;
  • Names and contact details (position, email, address) of three referees that are available to provide information about the candidate (these will only be contacted in the second stage of the selection).

A short-list of candidates will be defined in the first stage of the evaluation based on the application submitted by email. The short-listed applicants will be required to present a brief seminar and attend an interview at CAUP for the second stage of the evaluation (planned dates are 19-20 October 2007). Following the second stage the contracts will be offered according to the ordering proposed by the selection committee.

Applications deadline is 12th of September (updated).
