An Introduction to Cosmic Rays

Leyla Ebrahimpour
CAUP

Abstract
What are the cosmic rays? Where is their origin? What happens when they enter the Earth's atmosphere? Do you know that your body is bombarded with thousands of cosmic rays every minute?
Cosmic Rays are energetic charged particles, originating from outer space, moving at nearly the speed of light. Primary cosmic rays bombard the Earth's atmosphere continuously from all directions.
In this talk, I will give you some general information about the cosmic rays and their detection techniques. I will also talk about the importance of characterizing the Extensive Air Showers, which are produced from the collisions of secondary cosmic rays with the air atoms lower in the atmosphere, and their role in inferring the mass and energy of the primary particles.
