Validation of small planets via the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect

Abhinav S. Jindal
Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati

Abstract
The topic of my internship is the validation of small transiting planets via the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect (Gaudi & Winn, 2007). The objective is to test how we can use this effect to constrain the various scenarios of planets and false-positives. For this, we will be using two tools, PASTIS and SOAP-T, which have been developed by Dr. Alexandre Santerne and Mahmoudreza Oshagh respectively. PASTIS is capable of simulating any false-positive scenario, but not the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect, while SOAP-T can simulate the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect but not the false-positive scenarios. We need to combine both these codes so that they can be used to produce various simulations through which it can be found how the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect of a false-positive may vary from that of a planet. If there is a difference observed it will enable us to use this effect to confirm the nature of a transit candidate. During this cookie seminar, I will present the work I've done during my stay at CAUP.
