Spectroscopic study of Kepler asteroseismic targets

Cooperação Cientifica e Tecnologica FCT/Polonia 2011/2012 (Proc. 441.00 Polonia)

Principal investigator
Sérgio A. G. Sousa

The space telescope Kepler launched in March 2009 is the largest Schmidt telescope ever placed in orbit . 100,000 selected targets from its 105 deg2 field of view be monitored simultaneously and continuously for 3.5 years of the life-time of the mission. The aim of this application for the scientific cooperation is to explore aspects of stellar modeling and interpretation of the asteroseismic data by high precision asteroseismology obtained for a large sample of stars in various evolutionary stages observed with the NASA space telescope Kepler. To archive this, we decided to focus our cooperation at deriving atmospheric parameters of Kepler asteroseismic targets in order to:

1.- accelerate and facilitate the process of deriving information about the Kepler targets, and hence of the planetary systems discovered in this mission
2.- develop methods for computing realistic models of physical processes inside the stars
3.- introduce procedures of coordinated effort focused on maximizing the scientific outcome of the analysis of the data produced by Kepler, which will be particularly relevant also for the potential upcoming PLATO mission under selection by the European Space Agency

Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences

Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA) is a new but long anticipated research infrastructure with a national dimension. It embodies a bold but feasible vision for the development of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences in Portugal, taking full advantage and fully realizing the potential created by the national membership of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). IA resulted from the merging the two most prominent research units in the field in Portugal: the Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto (CAUP) and the Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Lisbon (CAAUL). It currently hosts more than two-thirds of all active researchers working in Space Sciences in Portugal, and is responsible for an even greater fraction of the national productivity in international ISI journals in the area of Space Sciences. This is the scientific area with the highest relative impact factor (1.65 times above the international average) and the field with the highest average number of citations per article for Portugal.
