VLT mid-infrared observations and active galactic nuclei

Abstract
In the first part of my talk, I will give an overview of the upgraded VLT mid-infrared instrument, VISIR, which represents currently the only access to these wavelengths in the Southern hemisphere. Furthermore, VISIR has several unique modes like high-resolution spectroscopy and coronagraphy, which will make it very relevant even in the era of JWST. In the second part of my talk, I will demonstrate the important contribution of VISIR to the research on active galactic nuclei (AGN), in particular the study of the dusty obscurer assumed to be present in all AGN. Finally, one important product, the correlation of the mid-infrared to the X-ray properties of AGN, will be highlighted.
