Solar-like oscillations in red giants

I will discuss the similarities between oscillations in long-period variables and those in the Sun. Analysis of power spectra shows that many semiregulars have several modes, each with a clear signature of stochastic excitation. This supports the suggestion by Christensen-Dalsgaard et al. (2001, ApJ, 562, L141) that oscillations in these stars are stochastically excited by convection. I will discuss the implications of this result and argue that solar-like oscillations are present in a star like the Sun during most – if not all – of its evolution from the main sequence through to the Asymptotic Giant Branch.
