The Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Porto (CAUP) invites applications for a postdoctoral
position on the VISTA HEMISPHERE SURVEY. The position is for three years with a possible extension of another three years.

The postdoc time will be equally split in:
a) the VISTA HEMISPHERE SURVEY -- VHS preparation and undertaking;
b) personal research project which can be associated with the VISTA Hemisphere Survey.

The personal research project should be on the following scientific areas related, to the VHS, and currently being explored at CAUP:
a) star forming regions;
b) embedded and open clusters;
c) low mass stars;
d) complementary X-ray and far-infrared surveys;
d) galaxy clusters.

The application requires support from a Portuguese research unit and a discussion of the scientific research programme should take place with the CAUP team involved in VHS.

The amount of the grant is 17,940 euros/yr net, plus a 1750-2000 euros mobility allowance. The amount of grant is very similar to the Portuguese GDP per capita (18k euros/year) ensuring a good standard of living. As a CAUP member the postdoc will have access to the scientific facilities including travel money and the opportunity to involve students in her/his research.

CAUP is a young and active research institute situated at the main campus of the University of Porto. It is the top astrophysics institute in the country and the only ranked excellent in this area by the national science foundation evaluation. The current staff includes 22 researchers plus Ph.D. students and two Master Programs, involving more than 40 postgraduate students.
