Spectral Synthesis using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm

João P. P. Moura
FCUP

Abstract
Semi-Empirical Population Synthesis (SEPS) is a technique used in Astrophysics in which the electromagnetic spectrum from an observed galaxy is decomposed in terms of base elements, i.e., individual stars or stellar clusters with known physical properties, such as age and chemical composition, to derive their Star Formation Histories (SFH).
In this Cookie Seminar I will present a possible computational implementation of a simple SEPS model. This was done using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm with Simulated Annealing to find the best match between the observed and modeled spectrum. I will also talk about my experience working with CAUP researchers through FCUP's Extra-Curricular Traineeship Program.
