Traveling Information

Porto (Oporto in english), is the second largest town in Portugal.
It is located in the estuary of the Douro river, facing the Atlantic ocean. The city is about 300 Km north of the portuguese capital (Lisbon), and is renowned for its famous Port (Porto) Wine.
The wine itself is produced in the Douro valley, in what was the first wine demarcated region of the world. The beauty of this area, with landscapes carved by men and nature in an unique way, is today UNESCO's world "World Heritage Patrimony Sight". Porto's historical centre itself was classified by the UNESCO as "World Cultural Heritage" in December 1996.

Travel to Porto
The modern international Airport in Porto has connections to most European destinations.

To travel between Porto airport and the town you have 2 options.
One option is to use the Metro. Metro's airport station is located just in front of the arrivals zone. The metro station nearest the workshop venue is "Casa da Música", which is on the same line (violet line) as the airport. The journey time is 25 minutes, and there is a train every 20 minutes, from 6am to 1am. Its costs around 2 Euro.

Note that the Metro works on an open system (no barriers that will open only upon presentation of a ticket) but controls are frequent. You need to be in possession of a validated ticket (tickets are validated before entering the train), otherwise you may be fined. For further details, see the Metro webpage.

Another option is to take a taxi. This is more expensive (25-30 Euro) and depending on the time of the day may in fact be slower than the Metro.

If instead you arrive at Lisbon Airport (300km south of Porto) you can take a taxi to the train station "Gare do Oriente" and from there a train to Porto. The fastest (and recommended) trains are the "Intercidades" and "Alfa Pendular" services with fares of about 20 Euro (see timetables at http://www.cp.pt). Note that there are several train stations in Lisbon. You should take your train at "Lisboa - Oriente" (closer to the airport) or at "Lisboa - Santa Apolónia" (closer to downtown). The trip should take between 2h30 and 3h (depending on the train).

At the "Campanhã" train station in Porto you will have then connection to the Metro and to the trains leading to the "São Bento" station (downtown).
